Lip Filler
So, let’s talk about lip fillers. We are always seeing articles and pictures in the press and social media showing botched lip treatments and overfilled lips.
These are not the norm and are often carried out by inexperienced practitioners who may not even be medically trained but simply beauty therapists or lay persons. 
Having dermal filler injected in lips is a medical procedure not a beauty treatment

Why do we perform lip treatments?
There are many reasons for injecting dermal filler into lips.
Younger patients are often looking for just a more plumped pout and juicy lips. Others may never have had full lips and wish to have some enhancement carried out. 
As we age the amount of fat in our lips decreases and the skin elasticity decreases. This causes the lips to appear thinner and creates the so called smokers lines. Thus by injecting dermal filler we can help to reverse this appearance.
Also the lips should never be looked at in isolation, facial profile is very important and also the structures around the mouth causing deepening of folds and mouth corners turning down giving a sad look.
Therefore it can be seen there are many reasons for carrying out lip treatments.

Botox v Filler Cost
This is a good question. Recently I have seen a lot of activity on social media trying to debate Botox v Filler cost.
Ok, so where do we start with this. Well, the first thing that that needs to be explained is that Botox and Dermal fillers are two entirely different products. They are used in totally different situations and are used to achieve specific results.
Botox
Let’s take Botox first. Botox is a brand name for botulinum toxin. In the UK there are other brands in common use as well, such as Azzalure, Bocouture and Zeomin.
Botulinum toxin is a muscle relaxant. It’s most common uses in the field of cosmetic medicine are for the relaxing of the upper facial muscles. These cause the frown and wrinkles between the eyebrows, the crows feet at the side of the eyes and the horizontal lines of the forehead.
If you look at your face when it is relaxed, you are unlikely to see much difference between your appearance before and after Botox.
However, when you try to frown or lift your brows or smile after treatment then you will notice that the toxin has blocked the transmitting of signal to those muscles rendering them unable to contract or move and thus no lines and wrinkles will be visible or greatly softened.
After having Botox treatment the effect will reach its maximum strength in around two weeks. It will remain fully active then for around six to eight weeks. Then the effect will start to wear off over the next six weeks or so.
In other words the treatment will need repeating approximately every four months to maintain a relaxed look. However, variations in longevity do occur due to genetic and lifestyle differences.
Cost
An average cost of around £250-£350 is needed to treat the three areas discussed above; and this needs to be repeated three times a year.
Dermal Filler
Dermal fillers have many uses but I will try and explain in general terms.
The basic ingredient in most dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid. This is a substance that is found naturally in your body in many areas, such as under the skin, within the eyes and in your joints.
Dermal fillers are used to replace lost fat and volume in the face which has caused deep grooves, hollowness especially under the eyes and lines and creases around the mouth and lips.
They can also be used in augmentation treatments to add shape that has never existed. Examples of this are lack of high cheekbones, irregular profile of the nose, thin lips, and chin.
The effect is seen immediately after treatment and has a lasting effect which is variable depending on the area treated and the product used.
As a general rule the more movement there is in the area the filler has been placed the shorter the duration. So lips will tend to last the least time, maybe six to nine months. Whereas filler on the nose can last in some cases up to two years.
Cost
The cast of dermal fillers will depend on the amount needed and the type required. It comes generally packaged in syringes if 1ml. which equates to 1/5th of a level teaspoon. So, as you can imagine many procedures require more than one syringe.
Like Botox above the price per syringe will vary enormously around the country but expect an average of £250-£350 per syringe.
Conclusion
As you can see now it is very difficult to equate the cost of Botox with the cost of filler due to their different uses and duration.

Aesthetics reports on the second International Association for Prevention of Complications in Aesthetic Medicine (IAPCAM) symposium.
The event took place on September 21 and was held at Church House Conference Centre in Westminster, London, where 120 delegates attended to learn the latest information and advice on complication management.
Conference director and aesthetic practitioner Dr Beatriz Molina introduced the meeting agenda alongside facial plastic surgeon Mr Frank Rosengaus Leizgold, who helped co-host the day. Kicking off the talks was aesthetic practitioner Dr Harryono Judodihardjo, who discussed considerations of complications and differential diagnosis techniques. He advised, “When faced with complications do not panic, but instead think logically. Ask yourself ‘can this complication be due to the treatment’ and ‘how severe is it?’”
Then, aesthetic practitioner Dr Philippe Hamida-Pisal presented a talk on prevention and management of complications in mesotherapy. Following this, physician Professor Syed Haq performed a live demonstration of a full-face polydioxanone (PDO) thread lift. This was later followed by aesthetic practitioner Dr Nestor Demosthenous, who showcased a full-face thread lift with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) threads which provided an alternative option to the previous variant of threads shown.
Following the thread theme, aesthetic practitioner Dr Kuldeep Minocha discussed the most common complications when treating the neck with fillers and threads. His tip was to, “Always advise patients to disinfect their hands before the procedure as usually the first they do after is touch their face.”
Partner at law firm Hill Dickinson Emma Galland talked on mitigating the cost of a complication and best practice before and after a treatment, in which the key message was to ‘document everything.’ Ending a busy morning was dental surgeon Mr Andrew Greenwood who performed a live demonstration on using hyaluronidase for dermal filler complications.
Guests were treated to a delicious lunch and given time to walk around the exhibition which housed well-known companies including Medical Aesthetic Group, HA-Derma, Aesthetic Source, Enhance Insurance, plus many more.
After this, maxilloplastic surgeon Mr Jeff Downie and aesthetic practitioner Dr Gabriel Siquier Dameto co-hosted a session on understanding the anatomy. Mr Downie demonstrated this with detailed videos of the anatomy and Dr Siquier Dameto put it into practice with live demonstrations using dermal filler to the cheek, chin and lips.
Medical device specialists Feza Haque and Salma Husain from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, then presented on current regulatory considerations of medical devices. This was followed by presentations of successful case studies from consultant dermatologist Dr Sandeep Cliff, aesthetic practitioner Dr Sophie Shotter and Dr Molina.
To round up the day, a live panel discussion took place featuring Dr Cliff, Dr Rosengaus Leizgold, Dr Shotter, Dr Siquier, Dr Nestor Demosthenous, Mr Greenwood, Dr Minocha and Dr Molina. Delegates were able to ask questions to the panel, which included regulation, product recommendations and case-by-case advice.
Dr Molina concluded, “It’s been another great day for all involved. Great speakers, an innovative agenda and fantastic support from all our sponsors helped us to provide a very educational day for our delegates. We have been able to hold an open, honest forum, allowing all to share their experiences with the difficult topic of complications within the aesthetic specialty. We look forward to seeing everyone back for next years’ IAPCAM symposium.”
